Since the more deadly third wave or the Delta variant of Covid19 was discovered in India a few months ago, many people across several countries have been dying from the ailment. Over 96 countries are currently battling the third wave without tremendous success. Before, the Chinese made  Coronavirus was not killing Africans as much as it was killing those in Asia, America and Europe but since the third wave came into Nigeria, the country has been recording serious increase in the coronavirus daily cases and deaths. As at last week, Lagos State alone had recorded over 130 deaths arising from the third wave. Government and health officials have blamed this on the failure of residents to strictly adhere to the Covid19 safety instructions.

According to some findings made by Umuaka Times, there is a total of 70,563 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the state while recoveries are put at 60,716.  A couple of days ago, the Lagos Sate governor, Governor Sanwo-Olu lamented that travelers who arrived the state from foreign countries absconded from Lagos State isolation centre. These travelers Umuaka Times gathered, have mixed with Nigerians in various states, thereby increasing the risk of infection in the country.  Following this development, Edo State Government has imposed restrictions on public gatherings in the state to forestall the spread of the disease. Gatherings in the state will only be reserved by those who have taken the Covid19 vaccine. While addressing the state last week, Governor Obaseki said, “People will not be allowed to access banking services from the middle of September 2021, if they are not vaccinated.”

Ondo State is another area of chief concern. From a report Umuaka Times came across last week from a national daily, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Medical Sciences (UNIMEDTH) who is also the chairman, Ondo Inter-ministerial committee on COVID-19, informed reporters that the state had lost 70 persons to Covid19 Delta Variant.

According to weather.com, as at mid last week, over 1000 new cases were being recorded in the country on daily basis. In Imo State, there is a total number of 1,697 laboratory confirmed cases, 14 persons on admission.1,645 discharged patients and 38 deaths.

Talking of Umuaka cases, there is no single case of Covid19 issue in the region because there is no functional government or public hospital around to run medical investigations on the indigenes. Many people in Umuaka have jettisoned the wearing of nose masks just like many others across the country. It appears that people have come to believe that Covid19 is either a scam or it has come to an end.
