2 min read

US based pharmacist, philanthropist and top community leader, Chief Ikenna Duru last week marked his birthday in faraway United States of America in a completely low key event which took place on Thursday. The events that led to the low key and almost sad mood of the celebrater were highly connected to the terrifying situation of things in Umuaka Municipal Council and Nigeria entirely.

When the Umuaka Times correspondent in America called on Chief Ikenna Duru, a multiple chieftaincy title holder last week to wish him a happy birthday, he thanked the newspaper and went further to explain his sad mood and the reasons for the low key event. “Today is my birthday and I sincerely thank the Almighty God for that. I also pray for more years and good health. You see, I am marking a low key birthday today. The reason is that there is generally no reason to be happy when you remember your roots back in Nigeria.”

Recall that two weeks back from this publication, Chief Duru granted an interview to Umuaka Times where he lamented that “Nigerians are not pleased with their country”.

Continuing in his speech, Duru said; “90 percent of news that comes from Nigeria is either emergency or very sad news. Look at the political space, many Nigerians can’t even breathe. The masses have lost hope and basically the future is bleak. The cost of fuel now is so high that many people have gone back to the use of bicycles. People can’t afford good life any longer.”

On the situation of Umuaka generally, the Enyioha Njaba Gburu Gburu bitterly lamented that insecurity has bounced back in the community with full force.

“I feel for my people, they can’t sleep with two eyes closed. Daily, it is one story of violent crime or another. See how our younger ones are being killed. We must do something about this and find a lasting solution.”

In his conclusion, he appealed to Nigerians and especially Akalites to work harder and power their works with prayers because in his words, “God is watching the community.”
