2 min readMs Lesley Chinwe Agams, a barrister at law, community integration activist, social worker and down to earth woman of substance who leads the Umuaka Municipal Council based Women’s Crisis Centre WCC received her awards which she won from Umuaka Times in the last two years a couple of weeks ago. Agams who has been inspiring and giving support to economically weak Umuaka women from 2020 till date, secured a grant from the famous Open Society Initiative for West Africa OSIWA, a member of Open Society Institute founded by the famous American billionaire philanthropist George Soros, is relentless in her interventionist social works.
In 2020, Agams supported about 80 Umuaka women with the sum of N50,000 each to build their businesses while in the year 2021, she led Umuaka Municipal Council to the New York based Bloomberg Foundations where the community emerged as one of the 50 Super Cities in the world. According to the Bloomberg Foundations, Umuaka was the only city in Nigeria that was listed among other Super Cities like Paris, Jakarta, New York and others across the world.
With these achievements, Umuaka Times named Barrister Lesley Agams the winner of her Man of the Year Award in the year 2020. This award made news headlines across the nation to the extent that the famous Linda Ikeji Blog, reproduced the report from Umuaka Times and several Nigerians commented on the award which was for the first time in Nigeria being given to a woman by a media house and other organizations.
By the end of 2021, Agams had also embarked on other social works including inspiring the Fix Politics program which youths in Umuaka came together and organized a watch party for the event which was simultaneously holding in Abuja. With her role in the listing of Umuaka by Bloomberg Foundations and many other social works, Umuaka Times also named Agams the winner of the Most Influential Woman in Umuaka Award in 2021.
Just last week, the two awards reached Agams in her Abuja home which she received with joy. In her acceptance speech, she thanked Umuaka Times for honouring her with the awards and promised to continue to empower the resilient Umuaka women.
Among other awards won in the year 2021 from Umuaka Times, Dr Chris Chima Nwachukwu also known as Chriwowo won Umuaka Times Man of the Year Award while His Royal Majesty, Eze Justin Uzoma Ezeala emerged Imo State Royal Father of the Year.
