More Nigerians, global institutions celebrate Prof. Chidi Oguamanam over UNESCO appointment.

Professor Chidi Oguamanam’s recent appointment to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) has continued to attract congratulatory messages and commendations from Nigerians, international organizations, academic institutions and media organizations across the world.The latest personalities to celebrate the appointment are UK-based medical practitioner, Dr Udochukwu Kings Nwaokorobia, and US-based pharmacist and businessman, Chief Ikenna Duru, both of whom have roots in UmueleAmazanoUmuaka, the hometown of the new UNESCO appointee.

The two UmueleAmazano-born intellectuals expressed delight over the appointment, describing it as a significant achievement for Professor Oguamanam, Nigeria and Africa indeed.

Speaking separately with Umuaka Times correspondents in the United Kingdom and the United States, Dr Nwaokorobia and Chief Duru said they were particularly pleased that an Umuaka-born scholar had attained such international recognition.Dr Nwaokorobia, who also serves as the administrator of the UmueleAmazano General Assembly WhatsApp Group, said he had long believed that Professor Oguamanam would eventually receive an international appointment because of his dedication to scholarship and research.

“Something within me kept telling me that Professor would one day get an international appointment, considering his commitment to learning and research. I am happy that it has come to be. I sincerely congratulate him and wish him well in his new appointment,” he said.

Chief Ikenna Duru, a well-known philanthropist and businessman based in the United States, also described the appointment as a welcome development, expressing confidence that it would provide another platform for showcasing Igbo culture and intellectual contributions to the international community.

“I am overwhelmed with joy and I am convinced that this will be a good opportunity to showcase our culture to the global force,” Duru said.

The latest congratulatory messages add to a growing list of individuals, media organizations, academic institutions and international bodies that have celebrated Professor Oguamanam since the announcement of his UNESCO appointment.The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) publicly congratulated Professor Oguamanam on August 11, 2026, describing the appointment as a distinguished recognition of his scholarly contributions.

In Nigeria, PUNCH Newspapers prominently reported the appointment and, in a social-media publication, expressly congratulated the Professor, stating: “Congratulations Prof. Chidi Oguamanam on this remarkable appointment!”

Pulse Nigeria also gave the appointment prominent attention, describing it as an achievement Nigerians could celebrate, while Nigerian CommunicationsWeek reported the development under the headline, “UNESCO Taps Oguamanam, Nigerian Scholar to Advisory Body on Science, Tech Ethics.”

Other Nigerian media platforms that have so far highlighted the appointment include UNIZIK 94.1 FM and Devs.com.ng andArise TV, while Umuaka Times has also published reports celebrating the achievement of the Umuaka-born professor.The appointment has equally attracted attention from international academic and research institutions.

The University of Ottawa, Canada, where Professor Oguamanam is a Full Professor of Law, has recognized his scholarly contributions over the years. He is also associated with the Open African Innovation Research (Open AIR) Network, an international research network which he co-founded and co-directs.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has also previously recognized Professor Oguamanam and his Open AIR collaborator, Professor Jeremy de Beer, through its Impact Awards for their research and international contributions.

Meanwhile, Aminu Ismail also publicly congratulated Professor Oguamanam, describing the appointment as a proud moment for Nigeria and Africa. The appointment has further generated reactions from academics, professional colleagues and other Nigerians who have expressed satisfaction with the international recognition of the scholar.
