Odoemenem calls for the use of smaller guns by security agencies.

2 min read

The YPP candidate in the recently concluded Imo House of Assembly election for Njaba LGA, Hon K.O. Odoemenam has called for the use of small guns or nonviolent guns by the police and other security agencies across the country. Hon Odoemenem who shortly after the Imo State House of Assembly election, decamped to the ruling APC in the state, made this call a couple of days ago while reacting to the brutal murder of an Obinwanne youth, Mr Onyinyechi Okebaram addressed as Onyeego by family and friends. Hon Odoemenem condemned in outright terms, the unprovoked murder of the young and promising guy whose murder almost led to the breakdown of peace and order last week in Umuaka, when the news of his death got across the entire Umuaka Municipal Council.

First, Hon Odoemenem extended his heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends left behind by the late Mr Onyinyechi Okebaram and prayed that God would continue to protect those he left behind. For those who have not been following the story, a couple of weeks ago, some men suspected to be members of Joint Task Force on security in the state, invaded Umuaka town where they reportedly shot and killed an unarmed Akalite named Onyeego and immediately drove off from the scene.

While holding an interview with Umuaka Times last week over the matter, Hon Odoemenem wondered why security men would invade the peaceful town of Umuaka in such a violent manner, kill someone and fled. He described the act as barbaric and criminal and called for speedy investigations and arraignment of the suspects who committed the offence.

Another issue Hon Odoemenem touched was on the type of guns used by some security agencies across the country. Odoemenem who was visibly shaking with anger during the interview with Umuaka Times, advocated for the need to use either robber bullets or smaller guns by the Nigerian security agencies. “Why should the security agencies carry guns that the moment they are fired, anybody the bullet hits dies almost immediately?”

On the general activities of some police men in the state especially in Owerri and Orlu zones, Odoemenem deeply expressed his worries and disappointment on why the police have made it an “offence” by the youths to dress well. “The moment you are well dressed in Umuaka, especially while moving from Umuaka to Owerri, you are already a target of police men on roadblocks,” Odoemenem concluded.

The Honourable finally urged the Police in Njaba division to move into full action and arrest those behind the killing of the innocent Obinwanne youth who according to reports, was nonviolent and had no arms by the time he was shot dead.
