Rivers State University students get dress code.

2 min read

The office of the Registrar, Rivers State University Port Harcourt has issued an internal memo dated October 19, 2022 which bans what the institution regards as “indecent dressing”.

The memo which was signed by Dr S.C. Enyihdah and copied to the Vice Chancellor of the university bans indecent dressings like wearing of “spaghetti gown” by female students, wearing of short skirts above the knees, by female students, coloring of hair by both male and female students and sagging of trousers by both students.

Other dress codes include wearing of ear rings by male students and nose rings by female students. Wearing of tattoos by both students, wearing of ankle chains by female students, wearing of long eye lashes by female students. Also wearing of gowns and blouses that expose the navels and breasts of female students was also banned. Wearing of tattered jeans by both students and wearing of bathroom slippers or bum shorts to the classroom.

Umuaka Times reporter who visited Rivers State recently confirmed that many students have picked holes in the new dress codes. For example, the university failed to stipulate the punishments violators of the new rules will face. Those who already have tattoos on their bodies like on their faces etc are confused over what next they would do.
Some student critics of the institutions lamented that the new dress codes failed to include male students who now wear nose rings, fix and painted nails as well as ankle chains.

For now, the students and the university authorities may be battle ready for a deep-rooted showdown.
