Second Niger Bridge gathering political storms.

1 min read

For the third time, the Federal Government of Nigeria has shifted the opening of the Second Nigeria Bridge. Recently the Minister for Works Babatunde Fashola announced that works at the Second Niger Bridge have fully been completed. According to the minister, the only delay which is seriously being tackled is the construction of the link road which starts from Delta State and ends in Anambra State.

The link road in question, Umuaka Times gathered is a four kilometre link road which the construction company handling the project is yet to complete it from the Asaba axis.

Although the Federal Government has given its reasons for the delay but some political observers across the country have ascribed the development to be political. An Onitsha based businessman who did not want his name in print told Umuaka Times that the “delay is deliberate. The Federal Government has picked the December date for the opening of the bridge, just two months to the presidential election. We all know that they want to use the bridge to woo Southeast voters to vote for APC in 2023.”

It is not very clear yet the position the Federal Government of Nigeria strongly holds on the bridge. Some people have the reservations that the bridge may be commissioned just weeks away to the presidential elections come 2023.

Indications emerged last which that the flooding which ravaged many parts of the country contributed to the delay in commissioning the bridge.
