The Farewell Journey from Port Harcourt to Azumini.

3 min read

The circumstances surrounding Mama Irene’s homecoming demonstrated the strength of family and community solidarity in times of bereavement. On Friday, October 23, 2026, the journey conveying her remains began at the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at about 10 a.m. The motorcade proceeded towards her husband’s country home at Azuokorie, Umuwa, Ohuru, AzuminiNdoki, in Ukwa East LGA of Abia State.

The procession included family members, friends, sympathizers and people travelling from different parts of the Niger Delta, the South-East and other regions of Nigeria. Police personnel, Nigerian Army personnel, Federal Road Safety officials and other security outfits were also part of the convoy. As the motorcade passed through towns and communities, residents and passers-by turned their attention to the procession. Upon reaching Abia State, the convoy made a brief stop to allow additional sympathizers travelling in separate vehicles to join before continuing the journey.

The remains eventually arrived at her husband’s home, where family members, friends and church brethren were waiting to receive her. The arrival marked the completion of a long journey and the beginning of the final funeral ceremonies. The wake-keep of the woman of substance subsequently brought together a large gathering of sympathizers, including people from AmurieOmanze in Isu LGA, the hometown of Engineer Magnus Agara, an important in-law to the bereaved family, as well as people from Umuaka, particularly ObinwanneUmuaka Autonomous Community in Imo State. For some attendees, the gathering provided a rare opportunity to reunite with friends they had not seen for years. Greetings, exchanges of pleasantries and recollections of shared experiences accompanied the solemn occasion. The convergence of people from different communities underscored the importance of family ties, friendship, religious fellowship and mutual support when a household experiences the loss of a loved one.

In the Christian understanding of death, the departure of a faithful believer is often viewed through two perspectives: the pain experienced by those left behind and the hope of eternal life held by those who believe in Christ. For the family of Mama Irene, her death is undoubtedly a loss. Her children have lost a mother, her grandchildren a grandmother, and her relatives a member of the family whose presence formed part of their shared history. Friends and fellow worshippers have also lost someone with whom they shared relationships, memories and fellowship.

The world has lost another elderly woman whose life had reached its full span of 81 years. Her absence leaves a space that cannot simply be filled by another person, because every human life carries its own experiences, relationships and memories. Yet, from the perspective of Christian faith, the words, “a loss to the world and a gain to heaven” express the hope that death is not the end of existence for those who belong to Christ. These passages offer comfort to grieving Christians by pointing beyond the pain of separation towards the hope of eternal life. They also encourage the living to examine their own lives, deepen their faith and use their remaining years to serve God and humanity.

For those who mourn Mama Irene, the expression that her death is a loss to the world and a gain to heaven captures this mixture of sorrow and hope. While her family and friends feel the pain of her absence, their Christian faith offers them the assurance that death does not have the final word.
