Why Afor Umuaka has no light for over 1 year.
2 min readIt is a real sad news that traders in Afor Umuaka market, which is the second largest market in the whole of Imo State have been doing their businesses in the last one year and more without electricity. Umuaka Times in the last few weeks moved into the market to find out what actually the problem is.
From Umuaka Times investigations, the transformer supplying electricity to the market and some parts of Uba broke down over a year ago. NEPA engineers were contacted and they came for assessment. After their assessment, they told the traders at the market to contribute money and fix the transformer. The traders refused, citing reasons that they regularly pay their electricity bills and should not be the ones to fix the transformer.
For the start, the traders were told to contribute N250,000 to fix the electricity and there would likely be another round of contributions. They bluntly refused because among other reasons, the amount would not be enough.
From some video clips Umuaka Times received from Mr Ibe Chinonye Justin, the chairman of Afor Umuaka traders union, repair works at the transformers have since begun. According to the video clips, Ozioma Worship, the APC House of Assembly candidate for Njaba LGA, has made a donation of N1,000,000 for the project. In the same video clips, Hon Chibuike Akalazu, the chairman of Umuaka youth leaders also confirmed the donation.
The target of the engineers and other stakeholders is to make sure that electricity is restored before the general election which comes by the end of this week. For now traders and service providers at the market will soon start enjoying uninterrupted electricity.
