A recent investigation by Umuaka Times has raised serious questions about the financial management and developmental direction of Njaba Local Government Area, following revelations of substantial federal allocations received in 2025.

Local governments, as the closest tier of government to the people, are entrusted with delivering essential services that directly impact daily life. These responsibilities include the provision of basic infrastructure such as roads, street lighting, and drainage systems; access to clean water and sanitation; primary healthcare services; support for education; public safety; market development; housing and urban planning; social services; agricultural support; and vital registration of births and deaths.

To fulfill these duties, the Federal Government of Nigeria disburses monthly allocations to local councils. Findings by Umuaka Times show that in 2025 alone, Njaba LGA received a total of ₦5,408,949,245.13. The breakdown of these allocations is as follows:

  • January – ₦363,364,070.80
  • February – ₦436,892,255.80
  • March – ₦413,581,957.49
  • April – ₦390,538,946.95
  • May – ₦411,878,874.44
  • June – ₦425,107,660.94
  • July – ₦450,530,730.55
  • August – ₦498,393,236.49
  • September – ₦507,985,264.33
  • October – ₦543,527,018.15
  • November – ₦511,541,461.82
  • December – ₦455,607,767.37

Despite this significant inflow of funds, Umuaka Times reports that visible development across the local government area appears inconsistent with the scale of financial resources received. Critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, sanitation, and education reportedly show limited measurable improvement.

The investigation further highlights concerns about internally generated revenue (IGR), noting that Njaba LGA also has a strong local revenue base that is rarely discussed in public forums. This raises additional questions about total income versus actual expenditure and outcomes.

Residents and stakeholders are now being urged to take an active role in governance. Umuaka Times calls on the people of Njaba to demand transparency by asking questions, organizing town hall meetings, and collectively determining the political direction of the local government.

“There is no justification for underdevelopment given the level of funds coming into the council,” the report notes. “Njaba has no reason to lack basic amenities.”

The newspaper also calls on the current administration, led by Chief Vitalis Obi, to provide a clear and detailed account of how these funds have been utilized, emphasizing that accountability is essential for restoring public trust and ensuring sustainable development.

As pressure mounts, the coming weeks may prove crucial in shaping civic engagement and governance in Njaba LGA. In few months’ time, aspirants for the different offices in Njaba LGA will emerge, Umuaka Times appeals to Njabans to retain those who have done well in their various offices and sack those who have failed the people. This appeal is not limited to Njaba but to the entire Orlu Senatorial Zone.
