3 min read

Soft -spoken Okolie Kelechukwu a native of Umunze Anambra State is someone whose talent in music has always manifested in him over the years. Stage named Bobby Nwamama, Okolie has written many songs and taken part in so many music concerts and contests across the country. When Umuaka Times got a call from him last week, he indicated his interest to grant an interview to the weekly newspaper.

Bobby started writing songs so early. “I have been making and writing music since when I was 14years but professionally I started music in 2015.” Because of his raw music talent, in 2017 Mekuzee Muzik and Entertainment Company signed him on its label which was to last a couple of years. The music company was to handle the music business of Bobby Nwanana but too bad, not much was heard of the deal again after the signing. Although Bobby refused to talk more about his deal with Mekuzee Music but Umuaka Times observed that the deal never went as planned due to some certain reasons.

Bobby describes his type of music as Pop Highlife which according to him is a fusion of  pop and high life. “Pop Highlife? This is the fusion of Highlife on a Pop based instrumental. Making a rare type of blend. I call it Pop Highlife.”

Still talking about his music, Bobby told Umuaka Times that he has no particular music hero but admitted he has quite a lot of them. In his own words, he summed it this way: “I do not have a particular music hero but I have top rated artistes who inspire me. Like Davido, Flavour, the defunct group P-Square, Tekno and few others.”

Due to his beautiful live performances since he went professional in music, the Umunze born artiste says he has since lost count of his stage appearances but he tried to remember that he had performed at E-Celeb Awards 2020 in Owerri Imo State, Trace in Your City concert in Unilag 2020. In addition to this, “I was among the pioneer artistes that started Umunze Entertainment Forum in Anambra State and I have been performing in virtually all her concerts. Here in Lagos, I have been on countless number of stages to showcase my music skill.”Bobby also disclosed to Umuaka Times his dream to helping young artistes. He frowns that up and coming musicians are often neglected by the big boys of the industry. “I will work towards helping young, unsigned up and coming artistes monetize their music even before becoming  full blown A-list artistes. Upcoming artistes should be paid for concerts and use of their contents too.”

About female dancers going almost nude on stage:

This is part of the music business. We can’t separate the business process in the entertainment world. Every stage performance is there to help the audience connect better with the artiste, so the stage act is beyond just the artiste on stage but the totality of all stage activities which include dancers. However they are dressed is a factor of the artiste’s choice of kind of song they are performing.

About sex and money in the industry:

Every artiste has his target audience. This audience determines the kind of song the artiste releases to keep fan base active. This is also a thing of choice for the artiste considering the kind of fan community he is reaching out to.

Only time will tell for Bobby Nwamama.
