Reports reaching Umuaka Times can confirm that Imo State could be said to have witnessed a number of significant developments in healthcare, security, environmental concerns and community affairs in recent days, with the successful completion of the state’s first robotic-assisted surgery emerging as one of the major highlights.On Friday, August 21, 2026, the Imo Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, Owerri, recorded the landmark medical procedure at the Imo Robotics and Oncology Centre (IROC). The operation was performed by a team of Nigerian and international medical specialists led by Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, a UK-based consultant robotic and laparoscopic surgeon and an indigene of Imo State.

The procedure, reportedly carried out on a patient diagnosed with localized prostate cancer, was described by Professor Ekwueme as a complete success. He said robotic-assisted surgery provides greater precision and can help surgeons preserve vital functions while reducing blood loss and shortening recovery time.
