Lagos police begin disciplinary action against officer on hate speech over Peter Obi.

The Lagos State Police Command has identified and commenced disciplinary action against an Inspector of Police, Osumah Frank, after he appeared in a viral video making political and ethnic remarks concerning Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Igbo people.The incident reportedly occurred while the officer was travelling in a public transport vehicle. In the video circulated on social media, the uniformed inspector was heard discussing Obi’s 2027 presidential ambition and making remarks questioning the possibility of an Igbo person becoming President of Nigeria.The Lagos State Police Command, through its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the officer’s identity in a statement issued on Friday, September 25, 2026.

According to the command, Frank’s comments were “careless, inappropriate and uncultured” and were made in his personal capacity. The police stressed that the views expressed by the inspector do not represent the official position, views or disposition of either the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.The command also said appropriate disciplinary proceedings had commenced against the officer in accordance with the established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force. It did not disclose the specific disciplinary measures being considered against him.

The video also contained comments about other prominent political figures, including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. Reports on the video said the inspector questioned Obi’s political prospects and made remarks suggesting that an Igbo man or woman could not be allowed to become President of Nigeria.The development has attracted public attention because the comments were made by a serving police officer while wearing the police uniform. The police command said officers are expected to remain professional and respectful in their dealings with members of the public.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, reiterated that personnel of the command must maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public at all times.The Commissioner further stressed that wearing the police uniform carries a responsibility to protect the dignity and integrity of the Nigeria Police Force. He said the command would not tolerate conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute or undermining public confidence in the police.

The Lagos State Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and policing with humility and integrity as the disciplinary process against Inspector Frank proceeds.
