She Began as a Star Athlete, Excelled as an Educator, and Ended as a Minister of God.

The family of late Mrs. Irene Ifinibie Fannahs (Nnaah), née Nwulu, has released the official biography of their matriarch, describing her 81-year journey on earth as one marked by faith, courage, love, sacrifice, excellence and unwavering devotion to God and family. Born in 1945, Mama Irene was a member of the distinguished family of Chief and Mrs. Nwulu Azubuike of Umu Mgbu Orie Nwulu Ama, Agu Dede Ulu. She grew up in a home where values mattered and good character was treasured.

A Brilliant and Courageous Young Woman:Mama began her education at St. Thomas Primary School, Azumini. Even as a young girl, she distinguished herself through intelligence, discipline and exceptional sporting abilities. During the first Independence Day celebration at her school, she emerged as one of the young stars who brought honour to the occasion, winning several laurels in the 100-metre race, relay races, high jump and other athletic events. According to the biography contained in the burial brochure obtained by Umuaka Times, those achievements revealed qualities that remained with her throughout her life, including discipline, perseverance, courage and determination.

“She would later run the race of motherhood, run the race of marriage, run the race of service and, most importantly, she would run the race of faith,” the biography stated.

A Woman Who Valued Education:After completing Standard Six, Mama proceeded to the prestigious Women Teachers’ College (WTC), Enugu, where she graduated with flying colours. She belonged to a generation of women who understood that education was not merely about obtaining certificates but also about acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to society. Mama Irene married Pa Friday AkaraFannahs (Nnah) in 1962, and their union was blessed with five children. To her children, she was much more than a mother. She was a teacher, counsellor, protector, disciplinarian, prayer warrior and encourager. She invested herself in her family, teaching through her own example the meaning of sacrifice, endurance, love and prayer. Her commitment to motherhood and family life became an important part of the legacy she left behind, shaping the values and experiences of her children and subsequent generations.

A Woman of God Above All:Above every other description, the family said, one identity stood above all others: Mama was a woman of God. In 1989, she joined Deeper Life Bible Church. Through fellowship, prayer and Bible study, her love for God continued to grow until she became a minister of God. She did not merely profess Christianity; she sought to live by its teachings. Her life reflected prayer, holiness, humility, love, sacrifice, discipline and forgiveness.

She carried her faith into her home, motherhood, relationships and everyday dealings with people. According to the family, she believed strongly in the power of prayer and the Word of God.The Final Chapter:After 81 years of purposeful living, Mama answered the call of eternity on August 14, 2026. Her departure, the family said, has left a deep void in the hearts of her beloved children, sons- and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, extended family, church family and community.

“Her greatest legacy cannot be measured in material possessions. It can be found in the children she raised, the people she encouraged, the faith she shared, the prayers she offered, and the lives she influenced,” the biography stated.

A Legacy That Will Live On:Although Mama may no longer walk among her loved ones physically, the family noted that she left behind something death cannot take away: a legacy. She taught that greatness can be found in service, that strength can coexist with gentleness, and that a woman can build a powerful legacy through faith, family, courage and love. “She started by winning laurels on the athletic field; she ended by leaving behind a legacy of faith. Her story continues in us, her prayers continue in the lives of her children, her teachings continue in generations after her,” the family added.

Late Mrs. Irene IfinibieFannahs, née Nwulu, was laid to rest on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Azuokorie, Umuwa, Ohuru, AzuminiNdoki, Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State. She was also the mother-in-law of High Chief Ambassador Engineer Magnus Agara, Okpatausorohanaeze I of AmurieOmanze, Imo State.

Mama ran her race, fought the good fight and kept the faith. For her family, friends and fellow worshippers, her life remains a testimony to the enduring power of faith, love, sacrifice and devotion to God.
