2 min read

The supervisor of Umuaka community security outfit, Mr Ikenna Ibekwe has disclosed to Umuaka Times that the security outfit formed last year and funded by Akalites in Diaspora has never violated the human rights of any of its suspects in the cause of carrying out its official duties. Ibekwe disclosed this to Umuaka Times in a brief interview with the newspaper when an Umuaka Times reporter confronted him with some allegations of human rights abuses associated with the activities of the group.

Umuaka Times gathered from Chief Ibekwe that the group has been diligently carrying out its duties with a high level of responsibility and with respect to human dignity. He further informed Umuaka Times that the group has been working so responsibly to the extent that some of its suspects had been driven back to their homes and handed over to their families after thorough questioning and nothing incriminating was found within the possession of the suspects.

Ibekwe’s claims, Umuaka Times later gathered were said to be seriously at variance with the accounts some people who spoke with the newspaper within the community presented. There are claims Umuaka Times is still trying to confirm which claim that some time ago, some women on Afor day were stopped by the security outfit and receipts for their farm produce from their farms were requested. There were also claims that financial requests were made from the women. Umuaka Times is still working on these claims to establish the truth.

Already, someone spoke with Umuaka Times last week on how the security outfit brutalized him and his girlfriend for doing nothing. Already, Umuaka Times issued a press statement to Akalites and none Akalites last week where it called for people to submit reports of human rights violations and extortions by any security outfit in the community including the police.
