Obinna Ngorka’s burial marred by violence and destructions.

3 min read

Obinna Ngorka, the 22 year old boy from Uba Umuaka who was shot dead a couple of weeks ago by some dare devil armed robbers has been buried. On the day of his burial which was December 28, 2021, youths who dressed in black trousers and black tops with red berets caused serious commotion, traffic logjam and a lot of destructions as Obinna’s corpse was driven in an ambulance from Umuaka Community Hospital mortuary to the Ngorka family house in Uba. The youths mostly made up of motorcycle boys from Umuaka and other neighbouring communities behaved as if someone hired them to avenge the senseless murder of the innocent 22 year old boy whose popularity among boys and girls in Umuaka and beyond remains a mystery even in death.

The motorcycle boys made burn fires along the roads as they moved. They destroyed people’s businesses with cutlasses and axes and even went into some people’s farms and caused heavy destructions too. When they got to Afor Umuaka market, at exactly the spot where Obinna was shot dead, they went to the POS agent who the robbers had come to rob before the killed Obinna  and beat up the pregnant woman mercilessly. Their reason was that she dared them and disrespected Obinna by opening her shop for business on the burial date of the late Obinna Ngorka. In their violent opinion, the woman should not have opened for business on that day, considering the fact that she was the one the robbers came to rub before they killed Obinna.

When Umuaka Times interviewed an eye witness to the beating, he confirmed that the woman could have sustained more injuries or perhaps suffered miscarriage had it not been a gunshot from a fearless police officer who shot into the air to scare the motorcycle boys.

Shortly after that, a man who repairs televisions whose shop was broken and many televisions destroyed also suffered a heavy loss.  When Umuaka Times interviewed the man, he lamented that the televisions belonged to his customers. According to someone who watched the scene closely, the motorcycle boys invaded the man’s shop because it was in front of his shop that Obinna  sustained the gunshot injuries that killed him on the spot.

Another person who suffered a serious loss was a shop owner who provides scaffolding materials, ladders and other building aids. The man had his ladders broken by the same motorcycle boys. As the boys progressed with the corpse of  the late Obinna, the destruction continued. rough motorcycle driving, heavy smoking of India hemp, breaking of bottles of hot drinks on the tarred roads and firing of guns took over the entire scenario as the journey progressed to Uba.

When the motorcade got in front of Hilltop Primary School Uba, the Umuaka Times reporter who was covering the event seriously became terrified and pulled out from the assignment for fear of being attacked by the motorcycle boys who were high on dangerous substances.

Passersby who witnessed the destructions, wondered why people who were escorting an ambulance conveying the corpse of a boy cut down at the prime of his life would be so violent. Some of the passersby tried to ask if  the owners of the farms and businesses the motorcycle boys were destroying in honour, dishonour or revenge of Obinna’s death were the robbers who killed him.
