Reactions as another Nigerian is arrested in Vietnam over alleged Laos drug trafficking deal.

From the report Umuaka Times correspondent in Cambodia and Thailand filed to last week, a Nigerian national named IzuchukwuCalistusOdionye, has been arrested in Vietnam in connection with an alleged transnational drug trafficking operation involving the movement of narcotics from Laos into the country. Umuaka Times gathered that Vietnamese authorities said 2kg of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two suspected heroin bricks were recovered after the drugs were discovered concealed in a consignment entering Vietnam from Laos.

According to a statement issued on Monday, August 17, 2026, the case was uncovered by the customs control team under the Customs Sub-Department of Region IX in the central province of Quang Tri at the Lao Bao International Border Gate. Authorities said that at about 8:30 p.m. on August 5, customs officers inspecting vehicles entering Vietnam from Laos detected suspicious images in a consigned package through scanning equipment. A subsequent physical inspection allegedly revealed the drugs hidden inside electric water heaters and electronic components being used as disguises.

Following the discovery, the Customs Sub-Department of Region IX assigned its customs control team to lead the investigation in collaboration with the Lao Bao International Border Gate customs branch, the drug-related crimes investigation police division under the Quang Tri Police, the anti-smuggling investigation sub-department and the provincial Border Guard. After several days of tracing the consignment across multiple locations, law enforcement officers arrested Odionye, a Nigerian born in 1983, on August 9 in Ho Chi Minh City. He was allegedly arrested while receiving the package containing the suspected narcotics.

Police said Odionye admitted that the package contained drugs and allegedly told investigators that he had been hired to receive the consignment in Ho Chi Minh City and transport it onward to Hanoi. Authorities have since expanded the investigation to identify other individuals who may have been involved in the alleged international trafficking operation. The arrest comes amid continuing concerns over the involvement of some Nigerians in drug-related offences across parts of Southeast Asia.

According to Umuaka Times investigations, Thai Embassy reportedly stated in May 2024 that the number of Nigerians in Thai prisons for drug trafficking had fallen from about 800 to 200. The 800 figure refers to Nigerians imprisoned over the preceding three years over various offences rather than 800 arrests in a single year. Cambodia has also recorded several publicly reported cases involving Nigerian nationals accused of drug trafficking. These include the 2021 arrest of Nigerian national David Vincent in Phnom Penh over alleged trafficking involving crystal methamphetamine and nimetazepam, as well as the arrests of two Nigerian nationals later that year who were sentenced to a combined 60 years for drug trafficking. In 2024, Nigerian nationals were also reportedly arrested in Cambodia in separate cases involving alleged trafficking of large quantities of narcotics.

Critics allege that the involvement of Nigerians in drug trafficking is as a result of the insensitivity of the Nigerian government over the plight of the masses.
