Umuaka and the Challenge of Yahoo Boys.

4 min read

Last week, some disturbing video clips emerged on the internet about some certain Yahoo boys from a certain community in Imo State who visited juju man to prepare charms for them to become rich. The boys in the video clips who appeared half naked did not in any way show any sign of secrecy or guilt over what they were doing. Each of them was aware that they were being recorded as the juju man was “blessing” their moves and requests to hit money soonest through yahoo. The incident which was said to have occurred in a nearby town to Umuaka spread like wildfire across Nigeria, thereby making the public to understand what yahoo boys are really up to and the extent they have gone in search of quick money.

A trip to Njaba River around 7 o’clock at night will shock any human. The worrisome situation shows that every night, motorcycle boys, girls and at times the elderly “invade” the river bank engaging in one sacrifice or another with the aim of hitting money as soon as possible. Investigations show that is not only in Njaba River that such sacrifices take place. Most of the boys, who are mainly from Umuaka have also discovered other juju men in and outside Njaba LGA who prepare yahoo charms and eventually assure them of success after some level of spiritual consultations and activities.

From Umuaka Times findings, there is no “motorcycle boy” in Umuaka that does not consult a juju man to prepare yahoo success charms for him. A source that spoke with Umuaka Times on the issue claimed that there is no limit to this scourge. “These boys (motorcycle boys) are really dangerous. They are into smoking of hard drugs openly, they are into stealing, they are also violent and hate anything about schooling. Now that they have started to consult juju men expect more dangers very soon.”

There are two aspects of the motorcycle boys’ lifestyles that the entire society has to immediately and urgently fight. The motorcycle boys have no iota of regards for academic education. They have proved to themselves that education is a global scam. They also have no form of respect for any older fellow, unless you are richer than they. The idea of describing education as a scam has really eaten deep into the fabrics of Umuaka society and beyond. Even primary school pupils are now seriously having discussions on yahoo deals and talking of the type of cars to buy when their mugu pay them.

Some elders have predicted that from now till the next 10 years or less, strange deaths may most likely hit Umuaka whereby you will see upstairs and see the graves of their owners. As it stands now, three dangers await Umuaka as a people concerning motorcycle boys. First is that yahoo “business” will soon cease to pay and the yahoo boys who are used to spending large sums of money extravagantly, will have nothing to fall back on. Consequently, crime waves will then escalate. What is happening now may most likely be a child’s play when compared to a world where motorcycle boys will have the need to spend money and there is no money to spend.

Another impending doom is when all the deities so far consulted will be asking for the renewal of the spiritual agreements between them and the motorcycle boys and there will be no capacity to meet up with their own part of the bargains. According to the same source who spoke with Umuaka Times on the isue,”By then you will see untimely deaths and madness at all levels.” As it stands now, Umuaka is in total danger. Education is no longer subscribed to, the gospel of get quick wealth is in every family.

Some Umuaka women Umuaka Times heard, have done their best to encourage their children to go into yahoo business. Some were said to have borrowed money and bought big phones and laptops for their children to start the yahoo deals. How all these madness started is shocking to the concerned families across Umuaka. In a recent interview with Umuaka Times, Chief Cyril Obioha, a native of Ibele community blamed the entire madness on the new trend of marriage in Igboland of today. Hear him. ” From that early time till today, we the Ibele people and other towns and villages across Igboland had the traditional habit of carrying out pre-marriage investigations which include a lot of asking questions to determine if the two families who want to engage their children in the marriage institution are either related or of good behaviour. But today what do we see? That investigative tradition is completely dead and buried. The result is what we are seeing today from the youths.”

Only God can save the next generation.
