2 min read

Umuaka Times Communications, the publishers of Umuaka Times newspapers has registered its solidarity with the royal father and the entire Obinwanne Umuaka Autonomous Community over the last week killing of an Obinwanne youth named Mr Onyinyechi (Onyeego) Okebaram by some security men suspected to be members of Joint Task Force JTF, operations in the state.

Last week, the newspaper paid a solidarity visit to the Chukwujiekwu Palace Obinwanne where it consulted and held talks with the royal father of the community, HRM Eze Justin Ezeala, the Traditional Prime Minister of the community, Chief Celestine Agu and a host of others who represented the Obinwanne Council of Chiefs during the visit. Darlington Ojy Onwukwe who represented Umuaka Times in the company of Mr Maxwell Obishirike, described the sad incident as a great pity and appealed to the royal father and his cabinet to take heart over the senseless murder of the promising young man by the security forces.

The newspaper through Mr Onwukwe, registered her dismay and condemnation towards the constant invasion of Umuaka Municipal Council by security men who force young boys on dreadlocks etc to transfer money to them at gunpoint. “These security officials go as far as searching the telephone contacts of the young lads, accusing them of being “Yahoo boys” and finally force them to transfer money to them either through a POS machine or USSD applications,” Onwukwe said.

In his final conclusion, he showed the interest of Umuaka Times to closely work with the Obinwanne community in unmasking and arresting the security officials who committed the said crime in Umuaka.

While responding to the presentation made by Umuaka Times, the Obinwanne monarch, HRM Eze Justin Ezeala thanked the newspaper and reassured his commitment towards bringing the killers of the innocent boy to book through the official channels and legal institutions in the country. He further disclosed to the audience how far he and other agents of the state have gone towards the case.

Obinwanne community and indeed the entire Umuaka Municipal Council were indeed thrown into deep morning on Saturday 10 June 2023 when some security men invaded the community and shot and killed Mr Onyinyechi (Onyeego) Okebaramm a native of the community at close range.
