Umuaka Times raises concerns on Umuaka vigilante group.

The Umuaka Ebe Iri internal security network has been advised to do its work diligently and observe human rights while carrying out its security operations and activities in Umuaka Municipal Council. Umuaka Times deemed this necessary as a result of some reports bothering on rights violations it has received from some Akalites. Some people have indeed come with some serious allegations of extortions and human rights violations but they are yet to prove their cases.
Last week, Umuaka Times spoke with Mr Ikenna Ibekwe, the coordinator of the group and he totally denied any act of extortion and human rights violations involving the activities and integrity of the security outfit. Ibekwe further told Umuaka Times that the organization has at several occasions helped those whose rights etc were endangered.
From all indications, there is a need for the stakeholders in Umuaka Municipal Council UMC, to always maintain a watchdog status on the group. On no account should the group involve in human rights violations or any form of corrupt activities. Arrests and release of suspects should be carried out with the dictates of the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. There must be a need for the group to carry out investigations to the fullest before it swings into actions and they must work in robust partnership with the relevant state actors.
The group should work with relevant authorities and individuals in town so as to achieve the maximum of its purposes. The group should do the best it can to always interrogate suspects and if need be, release the suspect or hand him over to the police at record time.
Following what Ibekwe said about the integrity of the group, Umuaka Times got in contact with those who confirmed that the security outfit has indeed violated their human rights to a very large extent. The claims were still being investigated last week as at press time.
