The remains of Mazi Chima Ohanekwu, an Uba Umuaka born retired police officer who served in Lagos till his retirement were on Thursday 15 January 2026 buried in his Uba Umuaka Ohanekwe family compound after almost a year. The activities that marked the burial of the popular man known as JJC and Gburugburu had no much fun and entertainment because of his young age. As early as 7:30 am, family members had gone to the mortuary at Umuaka Community Hospital to convey home his remains. About an hour later, the white Toyota SUV ambulance arrived home with a few motorcyclists who accompanied it. Inside the Toyota SUV was the casket containing the remains of the late JJC. With no time to waste, the ambulance drove straight to the corner of the large Ohanekwu compound that belonged to the deceased and made a stop.

About four youths were called to help bring down the casket which they did immediately and took it straight to the lying in state room. When the concerned family members had finished preparing the corpse for viewing, the master of the ceremonies announced the order of viewing the corpse as a mark of last respect from the people. The immediate family members went first followed by the large Ohanekwu family, Umuawaha kindred and more.

The lying in state did not last long as the people moved to the venue of the requiem Mass at St Mary’s Catholic Church organized for the repose of his soul. During the Mass, the officiating priest talked about death and life generally and extolled the virtues of the deceased as a man of peace who always joked with all and sundry.

The requiem Mass came to an end by 12 midday and the ambulance and the people who came for the Mass went back to the compound of the deceased for interment.  The graveside prayers lasted for about 30 minutes as the priest started the process by blessing and sprinkling holy water on the grave. By exactly 12:42, the remains of the 65 year old Mazi Chima Ohanekwu, JJC, Gburugburu were laid to rest according to Roman Catholic rites.

Entertainment of guests by family members followed immediately. Guests were attended to according to their canopies’ tags. Groups present during the burial included, Umuawaha family union, Uba. Christian fathers, umuada, 82 Set of High School Umuaka and a host of others.
