Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke born on 10 April 1986 and later died on 12 May 2026), was a celebrated Nigerian actor, entertainer, and humanitarian. He passed away at the age of 40 in Lagos following a prolonged battle with kidney cancer. Known for his charismatic roles in Nollywood romantic comedies and dramas, Ekubo’s contributions to the Nigerian film industry and humanitarian causes have left an indelible mark on the sands of history.

From Umuaka Times findings last week showed that Alex was born in Arochukwu, Abia State. He attended Federal Government College Daura in Katsina State before studying law at the University of Calabar. He rose to public attention as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria contest. Alex achieved wider recognition with his role in the hit film titled Weekend Getaway. This amplified his career which spanned over two decades, featuring in more than 100 films including Afamefuna: An NwaBoi Story, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, The Bling Lagosians, Catch.er, Zero Hour, and The First Lady. Ekubo’s performances were celebrated for blending humour, emotional depth, and mass appeal, earning him multiple awards and nominations including Best Supporting Actor at the Best of Nollywood Awards and the Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards.

Beyond the screen, Ekubo was an advocate for youth empowerment and humanitarian initiatives. He participated in numerous outreach programs across Nigeria and West Africa and received recognition for his social contributions, including the 2020 Certificate of Excellence from the Sapio Club SGD and the 2021 Global Social Giving Actor of the Year Award by the Nigerian National Awards. In 2023, he was named Rotary Youth Ambassador of the Year under Rotary International District 9142.

Alex Ekubo was also known for his distinctive fashion sense and appeared on several best-dressed lists across Africa, all while maintaining a private personal life dedicated to social advocacy.

 

News of his passing has sent shockwaves through Nollywood and his hometown of Arochukwu, where the community expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of its most celebrated young figures. Fellow entertainers have shared tributes honoring his life and legacy: Famous Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele described him as a “talented soul gone too soon” and prayed for his family.

Mercy Johnson another Nollywood screen diva highlighted his professionalism and infectious personality, calling him a “Nollywood gem.”UcheJombo reflected on the void his passing leaves in the film industry. Denrele Edun shared fond memories and photos of their time together. Ini Edo urged fans to remember his achievements while expressing her grief and prayers for his loved ones.

Ekubo’s influence extended beyond entertainment, earning him recognition in 2020 among the “Most Influential People of African Descent” under 40 for his contributions to African arts and social development. His legacy as a performer, humanitarian, and role model will be remembered by fans, colleagues, and the broader African creative community.
