Two prominent sons of Umuaka in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State, Dr. Tobechukwu “T.J.”Ehirim and Dr. Perry Ekwunazu, are set for what many observers have described as a defining political contest ahead of the race for the House of Representatives seat representing the Njaba, Isu, Nwangele and Nkwerre Federal Constituency (NINN).

Interestingly, the two aspirants share striking similarities. Both are academic doctors, pharmacists, businessmen, philanthropists, holders of chieftaincy titles, former senior prefects during their secondary school days, members of the diaspora and widely regarded as friends of the less privileged. Above all, they are proud sons of Umuaka, popularly known as Akalites.

Now, both men are seeking to test their political strength in the unpredictable terrain of Nigerian politics, where calculations do not always produce expected outcomes.

The aspiration of the two respected figures has generated excitement across the NINN constituency, especially among Umuaka indigenes who see both men as capable and people-oriented leaders. Over the years, Dr. Ehirim and Dr. Ekwunazu have built reputations for humanitarian service and community development initiatives that have positively impacted many lives in and outside Umuaka.

Dr. Perry Ekwunazu is not new to elective politics. Some years ago, he contested for the Imo State House of Assembly seat to represent Njaba LGA. Despite strong public optimism surrounding his candidacy, he eventually lost the election in circumstances many of his supporters still describe as surprising.

Dr. T.J. Ehirim also previously made headlines when he declared interest in the Imo State governorship race. His ambition sparked widespread support among youths across the state, leading to the formation of “Project T.J.,” a political movement created to mobilize support for his candidacy. However, in a dramatic twist during his party’s primaries, Ehirim stepped down for another aspirant, a decision that shocked many members of his political camp.

Despite that setback, Ehirim remained politically active, continuing consultations within and outside Imo State in preparation for a political comeback. Last week, he formally declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

Meanwhile, about two weeks earlier, Dr. Perry Ekwunazu had also informed constituents of his decision to seek the same office under the NDC platform.

Ekwunazu has equally intensified consultations across political circles. A recent viral video showing him with former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who decorated him with the signature red-and-white cap associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement, fueled speculations that he may enjoy significant backing within the party structure.

On his part, Ehirim has also continued to gain momentum. Both aspirants recently visited Nigeria from their countries of residence and reportedly met with influential stakeholders within the party. However, details of the meetings have not yet been disclosed publicly.

Political analysts say the emergence of two strong candidates from the same community presents voters with a unique challenge: balancing hometown loyalty with the broader question of who is best suited to represent the constituency effectively.

Umuaka Times findings showed that observers argue that voters in the NINN constituency may ultimately have to assess both aspirants based on measurable factors such as track record, competence, integrity, inclusiveness and accountability.

Questions being asked include: Which candidate has demonstrated stronger leadership capacity? Who possesses clearer legislative plans and a better understanding of the constituency’s needs? Who is more accessible to public scrutiny, debates and engagement?

A respected Umuaka chief, who spoke anonymously to Umuaka Times last week summed up the mood in the community: “Both candidates are from our town, so our responsibility is to choose the one most likely to serve everyone effectively.”

Checks by Umuaka Times indicate that both aspirants enjoy considerable respect within the constituency and among members of their political party. Many residents acknowledge that the duo possess the experience, exposure and credentials needed to attract quality representation to the NINN federal constituency.

As political activities intensify, attention is now focused not only on the electorate, but also on the internal dynamics of the NDC and how the party will manage the ambitions of two influential contenders from the same hometown.

For now, one question continues to dominate political conversations across NINN: who will emerge ahead in the battle between the two political heavyweights, Perry or T.J.?

Only time and history will tell.
