Currently serving as Lead Reservoir Engineer for Shallow Water Offshore Assets at Renaissance Africa Energy Company, formerly Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), Dr. Nwonodi has played pivotal roles in the development and management of some of Nigeria’s most strategic oil and gas assets. Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to reservoir engineering, field development and redevelopment projects, gas commercialization initiatives, asset management, data analytics and emerging technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

His professional journey began at the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), now the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), where he gained firsthand experience in petroleum industry regulation, terminal operations, metering systems, and field supervision. He later joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), working with the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), now NEPL, where he distinguished himself in reservoir management, well delivery processes, production optimization, and asset development.
Since joining Shell in 2012, Dr. Nwonodi has continued to demonstrate exceptional competence in integrated reservoir studies, project economics, field optimization, technical planning, and strategic asset management. His contributions have supported the successful execution of several multi-million-dollar oil and gas projects across Nigeria.
Academically, Dr. Nwonodi’s accomplishments are equally impressive. He holds Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering degrees in Petroleum and Gas Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt. Further strengthening his expertise in emerging technologies, he obtained a postgraduate certification in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas. Recently, he achieved another major milestone by earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Petroleum and Gas Engineering from the World Bank Africa Centre of Excellence for Oilfield Chemicals Research at the University of Port Harcourt.
His dedication to professional development and knowledge sharing has earned him numerous awards and recognitions including the prestigious 2025 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council Professor Mike Onyekonwu and Dr. Jude Ahamefule Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award. This award was presented in recognition of his outstanding contributions to reservoir engineering and petroleum development.
A Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Dr. Nwonodi has also distinguished himself through active participation in professional organizations. For more than fifteen years, he has served in various leadership capacities within the Society of Petroleum Engineers at local, national, and international levels, contributing immensely to technical conferences, professional mentoring, and industry advancement.
His commitment to excellence was further recognized in 2017 when he received the maiden SPE Nigeria Chairman’s Medallion Award as the most innovative technical subcommittee chairman during the Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition (NAICE).
