A meeting of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was violently disrupted on Tuesday evening, July 14, 2026, after a group of armed men invaded the gathering at Umuoyima Town Hall in Owerri Municipal Local Government Area of Imo State. The incident, which has generated widespread political controversy, has attracted sharply conflicting accounts from the opposition and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over who was responsible and what triggered the violence. According to former Imo East Senatorial aspirant Hon. Uche Onyeagocha and opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Action Peoples Party (APP), more than 20 armed thugs stormed the meeting while proceedings were underway.

They alleged that the attackers were armed with guns, knives, axes and baseball bats and unleashed violence on participants, including women and elderly persons. Several people were reportedly injured and taken to hospital for treatment. The opposition further claimed that the assailants vandalized more than 700 plastic chairs, destroyed public address systems and forcibly confiscated mobile phones from witnesses in an apparent attempt to prevent the recording of the incident.

Hon. Onyeagocha and the opposition parties alleged that the operation was led by ChinasaNwaneri, an aide to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, alongside individuals wearing aprons bearing the inscription “Project Monitoring and Enforcement.” They described the attack as politically motivated and accused unnamed state actors of attempting to intimidate opposition members.

The Imo State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) condemned the incident, describing it as an unacceptable act of political violence. The party called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, arrest those responsible and prosecute both the perpetrators and anyone found to have sponsored the attack.

However, the ruling APC rejected allegations of state involvement, insisting that the violence resulted from an internal dispute within the NDC rather than government interference. In a statement, the party described the incident as a clash between rival factions allegedly contesting the Imo East Senatorial District primary. According to the APC, disagreements over what it termed a compromised “ticket auctioning bazaar” degenerated into violence after Hon. Uche Onyeagocha convened a meeting of his faction.

The APC alleged that supporters loyal to rival aspirants, identified as Tony Okpe and Charles Onyeagbako, arrived at the venue, leading to a confrontation between the competing groups.

The party maintained that government officials and security operatives only intervened after the violence had broken out in order to restore public order and prevent further escalation. As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not publicly announced the arrest of any suspects or released the outcome of any official investigation into the incident.

The Owerri attack is the latest in a series of reported disruptions involving activities associated with Peter Obi and the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Earlier reports indicated that political activities involving Obi and NDC leaders were also disrupted in Benin City, Edo State, while similar incidents affecting Obi’s political supporters had previously been reported during the 2023 election cycle in parts of Lagos and Kano States.

Political observers have expressed concern over the increasing incidence of violence surrounding political gatherings, urging all parties to embrace democratic engagement and allow law enforcement agencies to establish the facts surrounding the Owerri incident.
